Confidentiality Policy

Confidentiality and exemptions:

As standard, anything we discuss in our sessions is confidential and will not be discussed outside of the sessions, there are a few exemptions to this rule, which are outlined below:

  • In the case of any disclosure concerning acts of terrorism (or potential), drug trafficking, or money laundering, confidentiality will be breached, and such disclosures will be passed onto the relevant authorities.
  • Be aware that confidentiality does not apply where it would mean that I, as your therapist, might break the law or where withholding information means I would breach the BACP ethical framework.
  • Should a safeguarding concern around children or vulnerable adults be raised, this may also result in confidentiality needing to be breached. Should I believe you are an immediate risk to your own life or someone else's, or may cause serious harm, I may be required to break confidentiality to ensure the personal safety of yourself or others.
  • In urgent situations, I may need to break our confidentiality to speak with emergency services, your GP, or the emergency contact that you gave me when you filled in your assessment form.

Supervision and confidentiality:

As part of my professional practice I am required to carry out continuing professional development, and to engage in regular on-going clinical supervision. This is to ensure an ethical and professional service to clients.

  • If I discuss any part of our sessions within my supervision, your identity will be anonymised. This means your full name, location or other personally identifiable details will never be disclosed. Any person whom I engage with for clinical supervision is also bound to a confidentiality agreement with me, this ensures anything a client shares with me remains within a confidential circle of trust.

Your consent:

  • Excluding my clinical supervision sessions, I will always try to obtain your consent if I feel I may need to break our confidentiality agreement. However, in cases of emergency, I may break confidentiality before informing you.
